چکیده

Tannins extracted from lignocellulosic industrial wastes, eucalyptus bark and chestnut shell, under different conditions (type and concentration of alkaline chemicals in aqueous solution and temperature), were analysed in order to establish their properties for different potential applications including: their use as phenol substitutes in the formulation of adhesives for wood derivatives and as chrome substitutes in leather tanning, and as a source of alternative antioxidants. Extraction yield was significantly greater for chestnut shell than for eucalyptus bark and the corresponding extracts showed much better properties for the uses proposed. For both materials the highest extraction yield was obtained using 10% NaOH and the lowest using water, however, water extracts showed the best properties. Extraction at 90oC with a 2.5% Na2SO3 aqueous solution has been selected as the optimum as extraction yield increased significantly with respect to the extraction with water and the characteristics of the extracts remained almost constant.

Carbon Dioxide Sequestration in Wastes: The SAPICO2 Project

The SAPICO2 project is an INTERREG IVA cross channel collaboration established to develop new technologies utilising accelerated carbonation for the creation of eco-construction materials from solid wastes. Over three phases, the project has identified carbon dioxide reactivity of solid wastes, produced prototype-construction materials (from these wastes), and manufactured bulk samples of carbo...

Biopesticides from Natural Products: Current Development, Legislative Framework, and Future Trends

The importance of biomass as a source of chemicals, biofuels, and energy is widely accepted. Currently, the attention is mainly focused on the valorisation of by-products from lignocellulosic materials. Chemical compounds derived from plants and microorganisms that provide good protection for crops against weeds, pests, and diseases (biopesticide active substances) have been used to formulate p...

Perspective of Microbial Species Used in Lignocelluloses Bioconversion

Lignocellulosic wastes are abundant, renewable and inexpensive sources of energy. This wastes contains large amount of residual plant biomass which is non edible material obtained from plant cell walls. Biomass could be obtained from crop, domestic liquid fuel, municipal solid waste and agricultural residuals. In nature, cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin are major component of plant biomass t...

Direct valorisation of waste cocoa butter triglycerides via catalytic epoxidation, ring‐opening and polymerisation

BACKGROUND Development of circular economy requires significant advances in the technologies for valorisation of waste, as waste becomes new feedstock. Food waste is a particularly important feedstock, containing large variation of complex chemical functionality. Although most food waste sources are complex mixtures, waste from food processing, no longer suitable for the human food chain, may a...

Lignin Depolymerisation under Supercritical Process Conditions for Aromatic Chemicals Production

Valorisation of lignin plays a key role in the further development of biorefinery processes for biofuels and the production of biobased materials from lignocellulosic biomass. Today’s increased demand for alternatives to fossil carbon based products, such as the production of transportation biofuels and bulk “green” chemicals, expands the interest and the need to create added value to the uncon...
